August 26th - 29th

Our FIRST WEEK in FIRST GRADE was awesome!!  I hope your child came home and shared with you some of the fun things we did as we were getting to know each other and our classroom expectations.

We will always remember our FIRST DAY of FIRST GRADE because of all the feels we had that day, but no matter if we were feeling nervous, excited, sad or happy when we got to school ... by the time we had our Jitter Juice and it was the end of the day we all knew we are going to LOVE 1st grade!!

We spent a couple of the day introducing ourselves sharing with the class something we like to do and something we can do.  It is very important to know each other so that we can take care of each other, in fact we talked about "OUR CLASS IS A FAMILY" and just like in each of our families we look out for each other and do what we can to help each other.  We start our days out every morning talking about being KIND and a REALLY GOOD FRIEND!  We feel so lucky that we were all chosen to be in this class this year!

The theme for this year at Quest Academy is
K I N D N E S S wins

So reading the story of The Rainbow Fish was a perfect was to have another conversation about how if you want a friend, you need to be a friend.  Each one of the kids made a beautiful Rainbow Fish that only ended up with one sparkle scale because he found joy in sharing the other ones!!

Here is what is coming up this week:
We will be celebrating August Birthdays!!
Monday: Claire & Brinlee
Tuesday: Kahler
Wednesday: Emerson
Thursday: Hayzlie

(There is no need to send backpacks on the other days!!  If the kids bring a lunch from home or a water bottle, those fit nicely in the cubbies.  Backpacks just take up too much space and are in the way.  Tuesday is the ONLY day the kids will need to bring a backpack with their folder and eventually a library book)

When the folder comes home Tuesday, make sure you pull out the READING PASSAGES to add to your 20 minutes of reading each night!  We have been reviewing all of the SHORT VOWEL sounds. The reading passages will focus on those!!   New High Frequency Words will also be in the folder, right now these should already be familiar to your child and it will be so helpful if they are practicing all of these words now. (We will start adding 5 new words each week!! By the end of the year they are expected to know 195 HFW)

Before we can read, we need to be able to know the letters and sounds those letters represent!!
If your child is struggling with this skill, reach out to me and lets find some things you can be doing at home to help them master this very important skill.

We are going to be focusing on writing the numbers 1 - 100 correctly

READ READ READ

While some children leave Kindergarten already reading proficiently, others don’t become true readers until First Grade. If your child is not already a confident reader, he should have these pre-reading skills in order to become a successful reader in First Grade:

  • Recognizes all uppercase and lowercase letters, as well as the sounds they make.
  • Can tell whether a pair of words have the same beginning or ending sound
  • Can identify rhyming words
  • Knows at least 25 Sight Words and can read them automatically.
  • Can sound out short three-letter words such as “cat” or “man” by blending the sounds together

The best way to help your child become a reader is to read to him and with him! Make reading together an important part of your routine, whether it is at bedtime, in the morning, or throughout the day. Reread familiar books and incorporate new ones.

As you read, talk about the characters and what they are doing. Ask your child questions, such as “What do you think will happen next?” or “Why do you think they did that?” Making reading interesting and fun will help build excitement around reading.
